What are the symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy?

Common symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy includes 

- Muscle weakness and loss of function

- Poor balance with frequent falls

- Limited range of movement

- Difficulty walking

- Dropping eyelids

However symptoms may vary depending on what type of Muscular Dystrophy you've got.

Who can be affected by Muscular Dystrophy?

​

Anyone can be affected by Muscular Dystrophy. Some types of Muscular Dystrophy can occur in early childhood while others may not appear until later in life.

What causes Muscular Dystrophy?

​

It is cause by the changes in the genes responsible for the structure and functioning of a person's muscles. This causes the muscle fibres to change which interferes with the function of the muscles ability.

How is Muscular Dystrophy diagnosed?

​

There are many different ways of diagnosing Muscular Dystrophy. These include:

- Investigating symptoms

- Discussing any family history of MD

- Physical examination

- Blood tests

- Electrical tests on the nerves and muscles

- A muscle biopsy

What treatments are there for Muscular Dystrophy?

​

There's currently no cure for Muscular Dystrophy. However there are many different treatments that can help symptoms and problems that may occur. These are:

- Mobility assistance

- Support groups

- Surgery

- Medication
